How many times have you questioned whether your current role truly aligns with your capabilities, values and ambitions?
Even if it’s not something you’ve said out loud, but you’ve thought it, it might still be hard to know what to do next.
In this blog, I’ll be delving into exactly why your current role might not be the best fit for you right now and what you can do about it.
The challenges and solutions when you feel your current role isn’t quite right for you.
1. The challenge: your values and vision don’t fit.
Most of us are driven by our passion, purpose and values and when they don’t fit with those of your organisation or your team, you’re bound to feel frustrated, disillusioned and dissatisfied.
The solution: know your values.
Inside out… especially your leadership and workplace values. Take time to reflect on whether your current role allows you to fully embody your values.
And does your career and leadership vision resonate with where you are as well?
Only when you’re clear about what’s really important to you will you be able to make an informed choice about what you do next.
2. The challenge: limited growth opportunities.
If your current role doesn’t offer you the chance to grow your skills and expand your experience, or support your desire for continuous learning and skills development, it’s likely you feel like you aren’t achieving your full potential.
The solution: check what’s available.
Consider whether your current organisation values and invests in the growth and professional development of its employees. Do they offer mentorship opportunities? Even if they do, it might be that you don’t feel like you’re making a difference or a positive impact.
Don’t be afraid to look elsewhere for the chance to expand your expertise and experience.
3. The challenge: lack of work-life balance.
This is the holy grail that enables you to maintain your wellbeing and support your long-term success. If your current role demands an unsustainable level of time and energy, it can lead to burnout and dissatisfaction.
The solution: make changes.
Evaluate whether you can work more flexibly where you are now. Does your organisation value employee’s wellbeing and promote a healthy work culture?
If not, it may be time to explore alternative opportunities that prioritise and support a beneficial work-life balance.
4. The challenge: feeling undervalued.
It’s disheartening when you’re underutilised in your role, overlooked for promotion, side-lined when decisions are made or just under-appreciated for your skills and contributions.
And that might be why you feel your current role isn’t the best fit for you.
The solution: don’t settle for less than you deserve.
Advocate for yourself. Seek out mentors, allies and sponsors who can support your growth.
Don’t be afraid to explore new opportunities where your talents are recognised and valued.
And remember, once again, don’t settle for less than you deserve!
5. The challenge: negative effects on your emotional wellbeing.
If your current role is causing excessive stress, anxiety, or emotional strain, it's important to address these concerns and prioritise your mental health.
The solution: prioritise yourself.
Find out whether your current organisation supports employee wellbeing initiatives or offers resources for managing stress. Does it encourage a supportive and compassionate work culture?
If not, it may be time to explore alternative opportunities and put your emotional wellbeing first.
6. The challenge: lack of clarity.
In your role this can lead to confusion, frustration, and a feeling of being stuck. Without clear expectations, goals, or a roadmap for your career progression, it can be hard to see a future in your current position.
The solution: work out what you want.
Knowing what you want is one of the most important things when it comes to getting clear about your leadership journey.
Start with a clean slate and think about what you want your career to look like in the future.
How you can work out what you want from your current role …or a new role, as a female leader.
✔ Carry out a self-assessment to identify your values, strengths, weaknesses, passions, and leadership goals. Reflect on whether your current role aligns with these factors and consider what aspects of your role are fulfilling and which ones are lacking.
✔ Communicate openly and honestly with your boss or mentor about your concerns. Let them know you want to grow and develop professionally. Ask about potential opportunities for advancement or role realignment.
✔ Develop your skills; be proactive and seek out training programs, workshops, online courses, or certifications that can help you acquire new skills or strengthen existing ones.
✔ Invest in your professional development; it will increase your value, in both your current role, and on the job market if you decide to explore new opportunities.
✔ Ask for feedback from colleagues, mentors and managers to gain insights into your performance, strengths and areas for improvement.
Positive feedback can help you identify blind spots, overcome challenges and will, ultimately, support your professional development.
✔ Network both within and outside where you work now. Networking can provide professional insights and potential career prospects you might not have otherwise come across.
✔ Advocate for yourself and your leadership aspirations. Don’t hide your light under a bushel. Share your goals and areas of interest and that you’re looking for leadership opportunities to develop your strengths and skills.
✔ Partner with a Leadership Coach; consider seeking guidance and support from a coach for personalised and objective advice and accountability.
Whether you’re seeking to overcome specific challenges, develop leadership skills, or clarify your career goals and coach will offer insights, strategies and an actionable plan for achieving them.
